Central to Hellenism is the universal desire to achieve and satisfy the human striving, or telos, for eudaimonia (Latin: Felicitas), the divinely inspired contented state of having a good indwelling spirit in which we are healthy, happy and prosperous. ![]() The term Hellenism was first coined in its proper religious sense by the blessed Emperor Flavius Claudius Iulianus Augustus to refer to the general entirety of Graeco-Roman tradition as it was fundamentally derived from the Greeks, or Hellenes. Beginning during this time, Hellenic culture and practices would be spread by Alexander’s successors, the Diadokhoi, and later on eventually Rome, leading Hellenism to become the dominant religion of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East. However, this process of non-Greeks becoming Hellenes truly flourished on a global scale during what contemporary historians call the Hellenistic period, an era which began following the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BCE. Hellenism proper is Minoan-Mykenaian in its origins, and it came to be the practiced not only by those who were born Greek by genos, but also by other peoples that came to shaped and/or influenced by the Hellenic ethos and, ultimately, adopted the Hellenic ethnos. Hellenism (Greek: Ellinismós, Latin: Hellenismus), also less frequently called Olympianism (Greek: Olympianismós, Latin: Olympianismus) or Dodekatheism (Greek: Dodekatheïsmós, Latin: Duodecimdeismus), is the traditional polytheistic and animistic orthopraxic religion, lifestyle, and ethos of the ancient Graeco-Roman world, and is the indigenous religion of the common Greek and Latin cultural sphere. Welcome to /r/Hellenism, a subreddit for links, discussion, and fostering community (both online and in-person) in the broader umbrella of contemporary Hellenism, the polytheistic orthopraxic religion of the classical Greek and Roman world(Including areas that were Hellenized but not generally seen as Hellenic regions specifically.) r/Hellenism Discord Server (Temporarily Closed): Come join the discussion in real time! I hope this symbol will recognize soon and appreciate by all of you guys. What is Hellenism?: Click here to see our comprehensive definition of Hellenism! Another thing is, This symbol looks like a question mark (?) As Hypnos associated with the river Lethē. The circle is actually the Lethēan water drop. The letter Z is actually a twig probably a poplar or a cottonwood dipped from the river Lethē. It symbolize that Hypnos fell Zeus into sleep. First description is a letter Z over the circle. So for the symbol, I made it according to his domain and small symbolic objects. They were called Oneiroi or the dream manipulators. Going back, Hera offered one of the Graces to Hypnos, Pasithea, the goddess of relaxation and hallucinations. ![]() Remember the 2nd time where Hera wanted to make Zeus fall asleep? Hypnos refuse many times since he doesn’t like to get in touch with that god of a ll GODS ( OF COURSE I DON’T EVEN WANT TO BE FRIED FROM ZEUS LIGHTNING BOLT □□) so Hiding from his mum was his choice ( the downside tho). Is Hypnos has a lovelife or a child? Well, yes. So technically it was always Hera’s plan soo yeah. So again, Hypnos did it Twice! Like really? To the greek god of all gods? Well, yes! ( With the help of the other gods okay) Hypnos didn’t do that for fun. ( Well another duh since Hera is his wife while Heracles is an illegitimate child. Of course, Zeus got mad like duh? It was his son that had been punished by his wife. There was a story where Hypnos fell Zeus to sleep just to let Hera do her “Heracles’s Labour”. He made so many badass stories and I believe that He is soooo awesome at making everyone sleepy as a part of his domain, sleep. ![]() Hypnos also depicted as a sleeping god… Of course! He must rest too! Do you want to fly 24/7 just to sleep everyone? That’s a big responsibility man! (□) So let’s give this sleepy god a silent applause ( oh gods is that possible? □) I know it’s weird but let’s say that he must fly with extra speed to fall anything into their sleep. Hypnos depicted as a winged man with an extra winglets near to his temple. Sleep, is like a temporary death, while Death is a permanent sleep. Hypnos is the personification of Sleep while Thanatos is the personification of Death, a peaceful death ( natural death to be precise)įor me, these twin bro are pretty awesome since death and sleep is related to each other. Hypnos has a twin bother (yeah just like Apollo dude and lovely Artemis) named Thanatos. Hypnos (HYP-nos) is one of the sons of Nyx, the personification of Night, and Erebus, the personification of darkness. This is a hypothetical symbol for Hypnos □īefore I explain what’s the meaning of the symbol, let us first introduce the Sleepy god. ![]()
